PSG need to find 90 million euros to comply with Financial Fair Play demands. Real Madrid have spending power and would be the first to table offers for their star players.

UEFA's threat to leave PSG out of the Champions League for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations continues to hang over the French champions. PSG might find themselves with no other option than to sell Neymar or Kylian Mbappé to balance the books and meet UEFA's requisites. If it comes to that, Real Madrid will be the first in line to take one of PSG's star players to Spain.

Income and outgoings

Back on 14 December, L’Équipe published a piece concerning the revision of the contracts which PSG have in place with their sponsors which could put the club into the red and prompt the UEFA to enforce a sanction which the French side managed to dodge in June. UEFA's Club Financial Control Body has devalued the sponsorship deals which PSG has signed with Qatari businesses (Qatar Tourism Authority, Qatar National Bank, Ooredoo, beIN Sports and Aspetar) by 37%. That information, together with figures published by Football Leaks mean that PSG require 170 million euros to avoid being hit with a sanction by UEFA. Income gained from the Champions League would take some of the pressure off - as it stands, PSG are already guaranteed to earn 80 million euros from the current edition of the tournament (last season, they only earned 18 million). That would still leave a 90 million euro shortfall. And that is not including additional fines if the investigation discovers irregularities in the transfer deals for Neymar and Mbappé, which would hit PSG's balance sheet even more. In 2014, the club was fined 60 million euros for failing to meet Financial Fair Play standards - a fine they had to pay in three installments.
